It was specifically designed for race use; however, the improvements from the design also greatly benefit street applications. The filter material is woven in such a way that larger particles are trapped closer to the surface while smaller particles are trapped deeper within the filter media. This "Inclined Density Structure" effectively increases the overall surface area through shape optimization. The benefits of the design include improved overall filtering, longer filter life, and decreased pressure loss over that improved lifespan (critical for race applications). Additionally, the filter housing is reinforced to allow for higher viscosity oils to be used safely when combined with the improved media. The original replacement filter for 350Z and 370Z models both supercede to the same OEM part number now according to Nissan. While the 23 Z® does not supercede to the same part number, its filter has the same dimensions and thread size. Additionally, the earlier model filter is recommended for Z® models where heavier than OEM weight oil will be used (something this NISMO filter particularly excels at). Also, this filter is physically smaller than the OEM size when comparing the outer cases, but only slightly (unlike the 300ZX filter which is significantly smaller). The sealing o-rings are nearly the exact same size, and the internal thread is also the same size/pitch. When comparing the NISMO and genuine Nissan filters, the outer case of the Nissan filter extends slightly more past the seal than the NISMO version. These physical differences have no affect on the functionality or fitment of the filter though.
